Iran senior Muslim cleric against participation of women in Asian Games, saying women sports are product of West dirty culture

Iran president, clerics battle over women's sports

A senior Muslim cleric has denounced the participation of Iranian women in the Asian Games as a humiliation, saying women's sports are a product of the West's "dirty" culture and should be shunned.

Tehran:  A senior Muslim cleric has denounced the participation of Iranian women in the Asian Games as a humiliation, saying women's sports are a product of the West's "dirty" culture and should be shunned.

Taking the opposite view, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad praised female athletes from Iran who won medals in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Iran's strict Islamic rules ban physical contact between unrelated men and women, and Iranian women are even barred from attending soccer games when male teams play.

Although Iranian female athletes take part only in games where there is no physical contact with men, clerics still don't tolerate that.
